Trail Blazers

Trail Blazers is a drop-off program for 7-12 year olds that aims to build comfort in the outdoors with skill-building like orienteering, map making, shelter building, fire making, basic first aid, leave no trace principles, and other bush crafting skills. We will also weave in cultural and historical trailblazers with discussions of Indigenous cultures and Appalachian Environmental Leaders and their impact on the land. Students will build a love of place for Appalachia and gain a deeper compassion and understanding for the flora, fauna, and culture of our region. Students will also help with trail maintenance on the campus and must be willing to walk with a backpack that can carry their food and water for the day.

Note - This class will involve a lot of walking through sometimes rough terrain. Students must demonstrate a willingness to adhere to important safety protocols associated with the additional risks of going off trail and an eagerness to practice leave-no-trace principles, listen and respect the instructor, and stay with the group.

This class is led by Tina who is excited to share her experience in the outdoors. Tina is also Wilderness First Aid certified. Annie is also involved in curriculum development. Learn more about them here.
